St Helen’s usually has two services on a Sunday, which are quite different in style. The morning service tends to be more ‘child friendly’; with a crèche and children’s activity groups available. We also have a monthly ‘All Age’ service where noise levels increase as the children join in and everyone relaxes and has some fun!

The evening service is equally friendly, and tends to go a little deeper with worship and teaching to challenge us to grow in faith. This is when our teenagers tend to join us, before going off to their CYFA group after the service.

Our music is led by the multi-talented music group, a bunch of musicians of all ages and who, between them play an amazing range of instruments. We sing a mixture of modern songs and older hymns, all of which help us enter into authentic worship. Occasionally we use the organ, which gives a more traditional feel to the service, but is no less Spirit filled.

Sermons are Bible based. We love to learn more about God from his Word, and use the sermons as a good way to do this. There are lots of people in church equipped to preach, so each sermon has a different style, depending on who is speaking.

We use the Anglican liturgy, varying it according to the style of service. Our services tend to be informal with no hard and fast rules about when to sit and stand etc. We come together to worship and pray and find out more about God; so are more concerned that happens for you, rather than whose pew you’re in or whether you are standing at the right time! We don’t expect visitors to put money into the collection plate, so let that pass by without feeling awkward.

Services tend to last a little over an hour depending on who’s leading and how many testimonies are included!

All the words to join in the service, whether for singing, joining in the liturgy or communal prayer are projected onto overhead screens, and we use multi-media presentations where possible to illustrate the service or message.

“The idea is that praise is always resident, at rest, waiting here in God’s house. You can feel it, touch it, taste it, but it won’t spring into life until you come and give it expression – only you can offer your unique contribution to the praise of God in this place, until you come, until you join in, that praise is silent- it waits …” Paul – Excerpt from sermon, February 2007

When we celebrate Holy Communion, we welcome everyone who loves Jesus as friend and saviour to come and take the bread and wine. People are always encouraged to come to the communion rail for prayer and/or a blessing, but if you prefer to stay in your seat, that’s fine too.

After each service there’s always someone to chat to and pray with, should that be appropriate. We believe in the healing and restorative power of God and want to offer every opportunity to make that available for you.

And when all is finished, refreshments are available to encourage people to stay and get to know each other.
